Moloka'i Mo Bettah!

One of the other Hawaiian Isles that I love is Molokai.  And it just so happens that the company I work for operates the ferry between Maui and Molokai so I get to go for free!  So, a few weeks ago The Capeners, Carrie and I all went over there.  I have been there once before, and I have flown over the island in a helicopter with Loralie, you can check that our here.

Hey Caitlyn, what's that rock look like?  Hehe, The Kalauapapa peninsula is the spot where back in the day people who had Hansens Disease (leprosy) were sent to and kept in isolation.  There is a small colony still there where some people with the disease still choose to live.  It's treatable now, but the colony still exists.  The peninsula is located at the base of the worlds highest sea cliffs (as made famous by Jurassic Park).  We tried to hike down the cliffs, but could not acquire the appropriate permits.  Still beautiful though!

We drove around the island and found a cool cemetery and a women's canoe race from Molokai to Oahu.

On the west coast of Molokai is the largest beach in Hawaii.  It's called Papohaku Beach and it's 3 miles long.  And just like last time...we had it all to ourselves!

We built a fire and had some delicious sandy smores!

Last year we spent hours in the water collecting shells.  This year, the surf was massive so there was no treasure hunting.  But we had a blast trying not to break our necks in the surf!

We drove from west side to east side, only about 40 miles, until we got to Halawa Valley.

The hike to the waterfalls is awesome.  It's straight up jungle!

These are the waterfalls at Halawa Valley.  This is one of my favorite places in all of Hawaii.  And of course, once again, we were the only ones there!

There are three different waterfalls in Halawa Valley.  Only two are accessible.  The 3rd one is just above one of the others.

Every night we slept on the beach and there were thousands of sand crabs.  At night they would crawl all over us and there would be sand crab tracks all over us in the morning.  On our second night we caught a bunch of them and put them in a bucket!  Crazy crabs.

And of course, we roasted some more delicisous smores!  Camping on the beach is AWESOME!
